India preparing bid to host 2023 Asian Cup
India is considering submitting a bid to host the 2023 Asian Cup, the quadrennial international soccer tournament involving teams from the region, the All India Football Federation, has announced.
The country is staging its first major international soccer tournament, namely the Fifa Under-17 World Cup taking place in the country until 28 October.
An AIFF official told reporters over the weekend: “Yes, it is true, there is every possibility of submitting a bid to host the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. The AIFF is thinking about it."
China and South Korea are the only other countries to have expressed an interest in staging the event, after Indonesia and Thailand withdrew from the race earlier this year.
The 2023 Asian Cup will be the second edition to feature an expanded 24-team format, which will debut in the United Arab Emirates in 2019, up from the existing format of 16 teams.
The host of the 2023 Asian Cup will be selected at the Asian Football Confederation's Congress in 2018.
